This World Ocean Day, we’re proud to share how waste is becoming a force for ocean restoration at Chadstone shopping centre.

Retailers in The Market Pavilion are repurposing oyster shells through the 'Shuck Don’t Chuck: shell recycling project', turning a waste stream into a resource for our oceans. Instead of going to landfill, oyster shells are collected, cleaned and returned to the ocean, helping restore reefs in Port Phillip Bay, supporting marine ecosystems, improving water quality and creating vital habitats for marine life.

The impact is already tangible:

🦪 ~3.1 tonnes of oyster shells diverted from landfill every month by participating retailers at the Champagne & Oyster Bar, Fishmonger and Maguro

🦪  In the first five months of the program, we diverted 15.6 tonnes of shell waste to our oceans

🦪 To date, Chadstone’s participation in the Shuck Don’t Chuck project has increased the volumes recycled in Port Phillip Bay by around 18%

Delivered with The Nature Conservancy, B‑Alternative and Veolia, and led on the ground by the Chadstone operations team, this initiative shows what’s possible when retailers, partners and teams work together.

Shuck Don’t Chuck is about turning waste into opportunity, strengthening reefs today and contributing to long‑term environmental sustainability.

On World Ocean Day, it’s a reminder that local action can have a lasting impact for our oceans and our communities.
