Parental Leave Experience
Discover how Vicinity's Parental Leave policy helps support new families
[Max Aitkins sits on a sofa in a cafe to discuss his Vicinity parental leave]
Hi there, I'm Max, I'm part of the talent acquisition team at Vicinity. I've just returned from my parental leave. I've been away for 16 weeks for parental leave, welcoming our newborn baby, baby boy into the world.
So it's been a very, very full on and exciting time and you know, just a big adjustment getting used to this, this new way of life. So it's, yeah, it's been fantastic.
So the parental leave benefit Vicinity is 16 weeks of leave, which can be taken all at once or over a few different blocks. It's available to all permanent team members and you can get it from day one of starting. And it's been really, really beneficial for particularly my family in general, as it's our first baby that we've, we've welcomed into the world. And it's just given us that time to, to get used to that, that life now and to and without the added stresses of work and things happening.
And, you know, be able to, to share the load of responsibility and look after my partner after she's given birth, which is it's amazing to have that opportunity.
The main highlight, to be honest, would be the, the option I had to see family Interstate. I didn't have that, that that added thing of I need to be back for a certain time for, for this or that meeting or anything else.
And just having that stress taken away has has been really, really good for us to be able to have that quality time with family.
The number one bit of advice I would have would be to just try and be present and in the moment.
It's very easy to get caught up in the day to day worries and everything, but always just taking a step back and being mindful of that. You're not going to have this early period again with this baby. You know, they grow up so fast already. We're seeing that early on.
And I think just taking each day and not trying to really think too far ahead.

A Day in the Life
Explore a day in the life of an Operations Manager
You definitely need to have a customer first mindset. There's no other way to do it.
My name is Tia and I'm the Assistant Operations Manager at The Glen and Oakleigh Central.
So I'm a retail shop floor baby at heart. I started in sales, worked my way through. I worked in visual merchandising for a really, really long time and absolutely loved that side of the business. From visual merchandising I moved into tenancy delivery and from tenancy delivery I sort of fell sideways into operations and that's how I'm here today.
No day is the same. We start every day with a centre walk, making sure that all of our main touch points are up and functioning the way that they are supposed to. One day you might have a roof leak, the other day you might be focused on compliance. Little bit of everything in operations.
A really important part of operations is understanding every single touch point along the customer journeys.
Things like our amenities, cleanliness. We look at the functionality of the base build, we check back of house areas, everything creates a seamless experience for the customer who's coming to shop and you want that to be really frictionless from way finding into the centre, from finding a car park. Operations focuses on all the things people don't think about when they go shopping.
I think the most exciting thing about working in operations is things are constantly changing. You're always innovating. You can't leave a building alone for 20 years and expect it still to be functioning the same it was when it was first built.
One of the exciting things about working at Vicinity is you get a lot of individual ownership over your asset and you get to work out the ways that will best facilitate you, your asset and your team.
If something's working for you here in your centre, you can communicate that up. You can communicate that out and other centres might adopt it. Sometimes these things even become standard operating procedures. So it's fantastic that this business actually really takes on board what's happening on the ground in the centre and is willing to sort of run with that at a national level.
I'm absolutely excited about my future with Vicinity. Moving into this role is one of the best decisions that I've ever made and I think I can keep growing in this journey.
