Box Hill Central's Retail and Co-working Refresh

A leading retail and business precinct for Melbourne's east

The first stage of Box Hill's long-term transformation is complete

In 2023, Vicinity ticked off first stages of its ambition to create an integrated world-class mixed-use precinct at Box Hill Central following two years of development works.

The first two projects to complete have transformed the southern retail precinct to provide greater benefit for the community and retailers.

The first of the projects was the 2022 completion of a retail precinct redevelopment. The second of the projects was the 2023 completion of a modern co-working space in collaboration with Hub Australia.

The retail and co-working revitalisation brings to life the first stages of Vicinity’s long-term vision for Box Hill Central which will transform the heart of Box Hill to introduce residential and commercial office space to support the popular shopping centre.

Retail Refresh

Designed to meet the changing needs and tastes of the community, Box Hill Central’s south shopping precinct has undergone a $45-million refresh covering 10,500-square metres of ground-floor retail and car park lobby areas.

Central to the design has been improved access and engagement with the surrounding street network, delivered through a new southern entry point from Carrington Road.

With a large part of the local community transiting through the centre from the south-west side, the new entrance is expected to attract more than one million visitors a year.

Accessibility has also been improved with the introduction of three new travelators and a new customer lift connecting all levels of the car park.

With such a large volume of customers visiting the southern retail precinct, works also included a widening and reconfiguration of the central retail corridor to provide more space.

The reconfiguration also accommodates new kiosks and three new permanent retail stores, further enhancing the retail offering and experience for customers.

Complementing the significant centre upgrades, Box Hill Central welcomed a variety of new major and speciality retailers, including:

  • Coles

  • Dodee Paidang Thai Street Food, Bar and Cafe

  • Dooboo.Melbourne

Co-working opens

Supporting Box Hill's leading retail offering is the introduction of new commercial office space sitting above Box Hill Central South, complete with its own dedicated entrance onto Carrington Road.

The office space is a result of a 10-year partnership between Vicinity and Hub Australia to introduce a premium 4,100 sqm four-storey co-working space.
