The Glen Welcomes New Retail, Fresh Food and Luxury Apartments

A premium mixed-use precinct in Melbourne's eastern suburbs

Transforming The Glen

Located in Melbourne's popular eastern suburbs, The Glen was earmarked early for major development works to transform the centre into a market-leading mixed-use destination.

The transformation would be delivered in two main stages; a $430 million retail and fresh food development, and a $450 million residential precinct delivered by Golden Age Group.

The retail and fresh food development would be split into four stages including a fresh food market hall, food gallery, fashion and lifestyle precinct, and a new indoor-outdoor dining precinct.

The total transformation of The Glen was delivered in the summer of 2020 with the opening of its luxury residential precincts and its first residents moving in.

A new fresh food market hall

The Glen revealed the first stage of its $430 million redevelopment with the opening of a new fresh food market hall in October 2018.

The new precinct offered customers convenience, choice and variety with fresh produce and hard-to-find specialty ingredients in one convenient location.

Anchored by a brand new Aldi, the latest format Woolworths, and the existing Coles supermarket, the centre’s new fresh food market hall features more than 60 boutique food retailers and specialty stores.

A true one-stop destination for foodies, families, and the health-conscious, The Glen’s fresh food market hall boasts a dynamic mix of fresh seafood, meat, poultry, game, fruit and vegetables, international deli goods, local gourmet items, organic and free-range products.

Under construction for six months, the $430 million redevelopment delivered the first glimpse of ‘The New Glen’ – a local lifestyle and community destination where retail, dining and entertainment deliver a premium customer experience.

On opening in March 2018, The Glen’s food gallery welcomed notable new dining operators including:

  • HuxtaGO - Huxtaburger’s first-of-its-kind new food concept

  • Chinta Ria Soul - renowned for its modern, hawker-style Malaysian cuisine

  • Capricho - whose South American chicken ranges from fiery and adventurous to smoky and aromatic and

  • Omi Wagyu - Japanese-fusion restaurant and premium wagyu rice bowl specialist.

New look fashion and lifestyle precinct

The Glen's new fashion and lifestyle precinct was unveiled in October 2018, housing more than 80 new stores including international brands UNIQLO and H&M and new and returning retailers across fashion, accessories, homewares, and beauty.

Vicinity partnered with NH Architects and MTRDC interior designers, along with specialist lighting and furniture designers to deliver a premium design outcome for the community to love.

Anchored by H&M and UNIQLO, the new precinct also welcomed a new format Target store, the return of local favourite Arena Café in a contemporary new fit-out, a new format Robinsons Bookshop incorporating a café and wine bar, and the arrival of ‘Play along the way’ children’s play zones.

Renowned Australian designer Suzie Stanford, illustrator James Gulliver Hancock and artist Carla McRae were each engaged to create large-scale permanent artworks in the precinct. Additionally, the creation of a permanent gallery wall in conjunction with local cultural institution Monash Gallery of Art (MGA) has delivered diverse Australian photographic works exhibited and curated by MGA.

The Glen was one of Vicinity Centres’ first forays into realising the mixed-use potential of its landholdings, with the sale of the air rights above The Glen to Golden Age Group to build luxury residential apartments.

Indoor-outdoor dining precinct

The final stage of The Glen's $430 retail and fresh food development was the completion of its new indoor-outdoor dining precinct, delivering a delectable assortment of global and local restaurants.

The new indoor-outdoor precinct opened mid-2019 with more than 10 new dining venues including a diverse mix of cult foodie brands rarely seen outside Melbourne’s inner city.

Catering for customers who are passionate about eating out and socialising with family and friends the new culinary hot spot opened for the local community to enjoy lunch, dinner, snacks and drinks in-between seven days a week.

  • Gami Chicken

  • Gong Cha

  • Macelleria

Luxury residential precinct, Sky Garden

In late 2020, the first residential project at a Vicinity asset was delivered with residents moving into Golden Age Group’s $450 million three-tower luxury residential address, Sky Garden, atop The Glen in Melbourne’s south east.

At the time of delivery, Sky Garden was the largest residential project built over a retail destination anywhere in Australia, and featured more than 500 apartments, accommodating over 1,500 residents. With hotel-style amenities, the apartments also boast a 4,000 square metre rooftop garden, with sweeping views over the Dandenong Ranges and Melbourne’s skyline.

The landmark project was also Australia’s largest air-rights development, with Vicinity selling the air rights above The Glen to Golden Age Group for $60 million in 2017.
